An electric skateboard is a skateboard equipped with an electric motor (hub motor). Longboards are also available as a variant with electric motor. The e-boards drive independently and do not have to be moved by muscle power. This creates a driving experience that many skaters compare with surfing or snowboarding. Originally, e-skateboards were a pure recreational sports equipment, but thanks to the upcoming license for e-mini vehicles, they could make electromobility on German roads more exciting in the near future.
For whom is an e-skateboard suitable?
For driving you need a relatively good balance and a certain fitness. You stand freehand on the E-board and should be able to keep the balance even in curves or on uneven roads reliably. In addition, the e-boards are steered similar to normal skateboards, so by gently shifting the body weight – who strongly fluctuates, drives no straight line. Of course, much comes naturally with time, if you practice regularly. But if you have big problems with the balance, you should probably do without an e-skateboard. There are generally electric skateboards for every level. Beginners get used to the motorized boards with weaker e-boards, and experienced skaters go full throttle with the high-end e-boards. For children electric skateboards are only partially suitable – here E-skateboards are recommended, which are slow and therefore easier to control.
Electric skateboard types
E-Pennyboard or E-Mini Board
Just like normal penny boards, the electronic electric skateboards are extremely small and compact. That makes them not only easy, but also very agile. However, they usually have a short range and do not go quite as fast as other types. Their low weight and the usually rather small tires lead to a rather restless driving behavior. E-penny boards are a great option to bridge shorter distances in the city.
E-longboards and are pleasantly quiet and stable on the road, because they are significantly heavier and larger built in comparison to other electric boards. Weight and size may not be convenient for everyone to transport. They are usually more expensive than smaller electric skateboards, but also offer a higher range and reach higher speeds. Due to their design, e-longboards are not as agile as smaller boards.
Hoverboards are the most agile e-boards: they can go extremely tight turns and even turn on the spot. They are light, very small and cost little. For many electro boards, the maximum speed and range are relatively low. The driving behavior is relatively restless.
Especially e-longboards are also available with stronger engines and larger, partly air-filled tires. Although the electric motors usually provide a lower maximum speed, but provide a higher torque. The combination of performance and off-road tires ensures that more demanding terrain can be negotiated. But the electric boards are also larger, heavier and a bit too bulky for everyday life.
Construction of an electric board
An e-skateboard is basically built like a normal skateboard, which has been upgraded with a few extras.
Most electric skateboards have a single electric motor that sits hidden. But there are also e-boards with two motors – mostly are particularly powerful devices, such. B. for the field.
The deck can be made of a variety of materials on e-skateboards. There are boards made of wood, fiberglass, plastic and many other materials. The top of the deck is usually roughened, textured or coated to give the rider more grip. Under the board sits the battery.
Normally, the remote control is standard on e-skateboards, but some models can also be controlled via app.
The remote control remains in the hand while driving and controls the throttle and the brake. Usually there is a throttle or a button that can be easily reached with your thumb. Some electric skateboards also allow other functions such as the choice of driving mode. To ensure that the remote control is not lost, depending on the model, there is a loop for the wrist or an ergonomic shape that sits securely in the hand. Engine / Performance & Speed
The engine power gives an indication of how fast an e-skateboard accelerates to the specified maximum speed and how well it overcomes inclines. Weaker engines are mostly recommended for light drivers and mostly straight roads. Devices with brushless motor are more durable and can be used manually if necessary, eg. B. when the battery is empty. A brushless motor is therefore recommended and installed in most electric skateboards.
Battery / range
The capacity of the battery is a major factor in how far you can get with the e-skateboard. In addition, the range depends on the weight of the driver, the distance and the speed traveled. The bandwidth is large and offers everything between 10 and 30 kilometers range. If you want to drive long distances with the E-Board regularly, you should pay attention to the corresponding range. Also important are the loading times. A small battery does not have to be an obstacle when the board is fully charged in 1 – 2 hours.
The weight also plays a role in best electric skateboards, because the electric skateboards are noticeably heavier than conventional boards without a drive. Conventional skateboards weigh roughly between 1 and 2.5 kg, while especially electric longboards can sometimes weigh more than 6.5 kg. It also depends on the weight of the driver. E-Skateboards in Germany – current legal situation
So far, e-skateboards in Germany have not officially been allowed on public roads. But soon the time has come: The electric boards are expected to be able to drive on German roads legally from spring 2019 onwards. The bill is ready and will come into force shortly. E-skateboards that travel faster than 20 km / h will still not be allowed on public roads.
